Portese is a small town nested
in the hills of the Valtenesi, amongst vineyards
and olive groves overlooking the gulf of Salò
and the mountains of the Upper Garda Park. A
fishing and farming town, Portese has for centuries
made a living from the nearby lake and land.
Now times have changed but we can still say
that life in Portese is slow.
Le Chiusure is located in the oldest part of
the village, right next to the ruins of a castle,
with our vineyards and olive grove on the other
side. An old stone wall surrounds the property
and protects the privacy of those that choose
to spend some time at our place.

At the entrance two century-old mulberry trees
and a small chapel built in the 1700s introduce
you to the courtyard structured in the typical
fashion of rural houses around the lake.
The apartments have all been recently restored
and decorated in keeping with the style of the
house. From the windows you can enjoy views
of the surrounding hills, the garden and the
inner courtyard. Our guests have at their disposal
a portion of the garden and a small library
of books and photographs describing the lake
and the surroundings.

The apartments (originally an old loft, a
barn and a porch respectively) are located on
different floors of the home and each one offers
something unique.
They may be chosen for their individual features
but are all equally comfortable.

The following paragraphs answer
some of the questions a visitor might
have. We try to give some suggestions
for holidays in the different seasons
of the year as well as a personal view
of our area.
The last paragraph (Saignon en Luberon,
France) tells the story of a place close
to our hearts where we are restoring an
old town home (maison village) for our
holidays and yours!

Saignon

Place

A
field of lavender

Sometimes we take
a holiday too. In the past few years
this has often been to the south
of France, where small unspoilt
villages nestle between the sea
and hills. Here we were lucky enough
to buy a small maison village in
the Luberon, a natural and cultural
park in the hills between Avignon
and Aix en Provence.
Who brought us to
the Luberon was Albert Camus, buried
at Lourmarin, who bought a house
here in the nineteen fifties after
he won the Nobel prize, perhaps
finding in the light of the south
of France memories of his Algerian
childhood.
The town's name is Saignon, 4 km
from Apt, if you want to look it
up on the map. A total of 1,000
inhabitants, an eleventh century
church, three squares and several
fountains. Our maison is in the
Place de l’Eglise, and, at
the rear, faces on to the village’s
main road, Rue de la Bourgade.
On the ground floor there is a large
living room with a dining table,
a kitchen area (with an oven, a
microwave oven and a dishwasher)
and a small laundry room (with a
washing machine).
On the first floor there are two
bedrooms and a bathroom (with a
bath).
On the second floor there is a large
room with four beds and a bathroom
(with a shower).
Each floor is 45 square metres.
Holiday in Luberon involves spending
time amongst nature ranging from
areas of wilderness on the top of
the highest hills to farm land spread
with vineyards and cherry trees,
with the splashes of colour made
by the fields of lavender making
this countryside unforgettable.
One can make day trips to the sea
(to Cassis or the Calanque of Marseilles
or other beautiful and less well
known beaches) or one can go canoeing
in the nearby rivers (Sorgue, Ardeche,
Verdun).
Avignon, Aix en Provence and Marseilles
are 45 minutes drive away and nearer
to reach the small villages of Luberon
amply repay a visit. These villages
hold festivals and put on evenings
of music and theatre (often of a
very high quality). These things
and good food and wine will make
your stay very interesting culturally
as well.
