The Le Chiusure Farm is located
in Portese, a small village close to San Felice
del Benaco, only a few hundred meters from the
shore of Lake Garda.
Within a radius of one kilometer you will find
the old country house in which we live, the
cellar and all the vineyards (approximately
four hectares) and olive groves (two hectares)
in the three parts of our estate: the Brolo,
enclosed by an old stone wall, the Campei, in
the countryside of Portese, and the Roseti,
overlooking the Salò bay.

Our vineyards.
All the vineyards have been planted in the past
fifteen years, bringing the rows closer each
time in order to reduce the yield per plant.
In 1992 our plantation system was of 4,500 plants
per hectare; in 1995/96 we increased to 5,300
plants per hectare and by the year 2000 our
vineyards varied between 6,000 and 6,800 plants
per hectare depending on the grape variety.
The presence of anti-hail nets on all the farm's
vineyards, positioned vertically to protect
the western side of the rows, has not allowed
us to have less than 2.25 meters between the
rows, so we have obtained a greater density
by distancing the plants in each row by 0.65
meters.
Our aim is to produce around 7,000-8,000 kilograms
of grapes per hectare. Each plant thus carries
slightly less than 2 kilos on the 1992 vines,
1.5 kilos on the 1995/96 vines and 1-1.2 kilos
on the more recent vines.
The vine-growing system is the classic guyot,
which is preferred for the better positioning
of the grapes in the space. However on a few
varieties we are testing the cordone speronato
growing method.

The varieties.
Le Chiusure grows 6 different varieties of red
grapes.
- Groppello (32% of the vines). A local
variety which is at the base of two of our
wines, Groppello and Chiaretto.
- Barbera (22% of the vines). This
variety is present in different percentages
in all the company wines for its contribution
to acidity.
- Rebo (20% of the vines). This variety
was developed in Trentino in the 1950s during
a project aimed at improving local grapes
using the great French varieties. It is not
well known but holds great potential for the
future and is present in the composition of
the Malborghetto.
- Sangiovese (11% of the vines). This
variety, together with Barbera, is at the
base of the Campei.
- Merlot (10% of the vines). One of
the two great Bordeaux varieties for the cuvee
at the base of the Malborghetto.
- Marzemino (5% of the vines).
The olive grove.
In the farm's three fields - Brolo, Campei
and Roseti - we grow 650 olive trees.
Approximately 150 are older than 40 years and
raised according to the traditional multiple
branch system. The remaining 500 have been planted
in the past 12 years and are grown in narrow
rows according to modern olive-growing theory.
We grow the following varieties: Casaliva (30%),
a local Lake Garda variety of the Frantoio family,
Leccino (42%), Frantoio (23%) and Pendolino
(5%), which are Tuscan varieties that have adapted
well to the climate here on the lake.
